MARES ℧

The strength of the Silverhorne mare base is not simply theoretical.

It has been validated through national inspection results and proven through the consistent production of exceptional foals.

Silverhorne’s Mare Base

Where Modern Sporthorse Talent Begins

  • At Silverhorne, everything begins with the mares.

While stallions often capture the spotlight, experienced breeders know the true strength of a sporthorse program lies in its mare families. The Silverhorne breeding program has been built carefully around a distinguished group of Hanoverian mares whose bloodlines combine athletic ability, rideability, refinement, and modern sporthorse type. These mares consistently produce foals that display the qualities riders and professionals seek most:

    • Correct conformation

    • Elastic, balanced movement

    • Intelligent and trainable temperaments

    • Natural athletic ability suited for hunter, jumper, and dressage sport

  • Sir Caletto has sired more than 38 warmblood inspection top or champion foals at last count. An impressive number to be sure and with good reason.

The quality of the Silverhorne mares has been confirmed through the American Hanoverian Society National Inspection Tour, through Belgian, GOV, KWPN, ISR and SWANA inspections where mares are evaluated on conformation, movement, athleticism, and overall breeding value.

During the 2021 AHS National Inspection Tour, Silverhorne achieved a remarkable distinction. Of the 25 mares recognized nationally as the highest scoring mares presented that year, eight came from the Silverhorne program.

For a single breeding program to account for nearly one-third of the top-ranked mares in the country represents an extraordinary validation of the Silverhorne breeding philosophy and the depth of its mare families.

Among the standout mares recognized during that tour were:

    • Sarbonne S: A daughter of Sir Caletto, Sarbonne S achieved one of the highest inspection scores recorded nationally during the 2021 tour. Her elegant sporthorse type, correct conformation, and expressive movement made her one of the most admired mares presented that year.

    • Caroline Kennedy S: Also recognized during the 2021 inspection tour, Caroline Kennedy S earned ARS (AHS Recognition Status) honors. She represents the successful cross of Cunningham x Sir Caletto, a pairing that has proven exceptionally reliable in producing modern sporthorses with athletic ability and exceptional rideability.

Together with the other top-scoring mares from the program, these recognitions confirm the strength of the Silverhorne mares as one of the most successful mare groups presented nationally in that year’s inspections.

  • Few stallions have influenced the Silverhorne program as profoundly as Sir Caletto. His daughters consistently transmit a unique combination of:

    • Modern sporthorse elegance

    • Careful jumping technique

    • Balanced athletic movement

    • Intelligent, rideable and trainable temperaments

  • Behind the Silverhorne mares stands a deep lineage of influential Hanoverian and German sporthorse sires who helped shape modern sporthorse breeding.

Among the most important are and those too numerous to name but deserving a recognition and are long Proven: Diamont Trapper, Pik Bube, Goldfasan, Bolero, Grande Servus-A stallion known for producing international-level show jumpers with tremendous scope, courage, and competitive instinct.

    • Sandro-A legendary sire whose offspring excelled across disciplines, contributing athletic movement, elegance, and modern sporthorse refinement.

    • Singular Joter-Known for producing athletic sporthorses with strong performance instincts.

    • Goldfasan-An influential Hanoverian sire recognized for powerful hindquarters and jumping strength.

    • Bolero-One of the most important dressage sires in Hanoverian history, contributing elasticity, balance, and exceptional rideability.

    • Grande-A legendary Hanoverian foundation sire whose influence extends through generations of elite sporthorses.

    • Prinz Gaylord-A respected contributor of athletic type and modern sporthorse refinement.

Together these bloodlines form the deep genetic foundation of the Silverhorne mares, combining classical European breeding with modern performance traits.

  • The Silverhorne program preserves the essential influence of the Thoroughbred through the exceptional stallion Kennedy Road xx and Pass the Glass xx. They fulfilled an initial requirement for lightening up some of the more old fashioned mares initially in the available breeding pool in the late 1990’s

    This influential thoroughbred line contributes:

    • Refinement and blood

    • Endurance and stamina

    • Quick reflexes and athletic responsiveness

    • A lighter, more modern sporthorse silhouette

This infusion of blood ensures that the Silverhorne horses remain athletic, elegant, and competitive in modern sport disciplines, particularly in the hunter and jumper rings.

  • Great mares transmit more than pedigree.

They pass along character, trainability, soundness, and competitive instinct—qualities that cannot be manufactured later through training alone.

When the Silverhorne mares are matched with carefully selected international stallions, the result is a consistent production of elite sporthorse prospects.

2025 stand out foals illustrate this perfectly.

  • From her earliest days, Hermes S has displayed the qualities breeders hope to see in a young sporthorse. By EH Herzendieb, a stallion celebrated for producing elegant, rideable dressage horses, Hermes combines:

    • Exceptional body type • Elastic, expressive movement • Natural balance and athleticism

    • A very warm, winning disposition

Her pedigree blends EH Herzendieb’s modern dressage brilliance with the proven strength of the Silverhorne mare families, producing a filly whose athletic type and trainable temperament suggest tremendous long-term potential.

  • Few foals demonstrate quality as clearly from the beginning as Obi Wan Kanobi S.

By the international Grand Prix stallion Orbetello, Obi earned the prestigious American Hanoverian Society Gold Medal Foal designation, recognizing exceptional conformation, movement, and athletic type. His pedigree represents an ideal combination of:

    • The international jumping ability of Orbetello, who competed at the Grand Prix level with Margie Goldstein-Engle

    • The athletic refinement of the Sir Caletto mare line

The result is a colt displaying:

    • Natural athletic and future jumping instinct

    • Powerful, balanced movement

    • Correct sporthorse conformation

    • A confident and intelligent temperament

Obi Wan Kanobi S embodies the goal of the Silverhorne breeding program: a modern hunter-jumper prospect with both talent and great potential rideability.

  • It is the depth and quality of the mare base.

Their success on the AHS National Inspection Tour, including the extraordinary achievement of eight top-ranking mares among the twenty-five highest scoring mares in the nation in 2021, confirms the strength of this foundation.

When these exceptional mares are paired with the world’s leading modern stallions, the result is clear: Beautiful, athletic sporthorses bred to become exceptional competition partners.
